healthy futures across Ladakh
education for all
HIV, Hep B and Girls' Health Ed
Access to information is rapidly changing for the better across the Western Himalayas. But we need to do more for the sake of our future mothers.
We are supporting remote village testing, counselling and health education where women naturally gather.
While working in a women’s cooperative, we create free – and often hilarious – discussions on health, led by a professional counsellor. And we partner with others to create micro-industries that help women earn and problem-solve (like sewing washable menstrual pads).
Girls' Innovation Centres
The remote-village girls who need access to skills development the most are often left behind by a rote learning system. And yet they are so eager to build skills.
We are supporting VoTech Channels in our MeshNets, Winter Incubator Camps and importantly, Girl’s Innovation Centres.
The Centres are run by the girls, as they learn business skills they also learn teamwork and communication. We provide equipment that best takes advantage of their local resources while encouraging 21st Century skills – like computer-aided design and marketing for a global market.
Yountan Yargyas MeshNet
In parts of Ladakh UT, especially during COVID lockdowns, there is no village tower, schools are shut, and teachers struggle to provide quality resources for learners.
We are developing an offline learning system, innovative in its technology and more innovative in its content.
The offline server provides access to resources from Khan Academy to PhET. It makes use of a government-sponsored tablets project. And it develops 21st Century Skills through channels such as the Village Daily News, Ladakhipedia and PBL Project support.
Innovative Literacy and Learning
Across the Himalayas children leave their homes for residential schools, yet learning to read and write may no longer be enough to prepare traditional cultures for a changing world.
We want to see children wrapped in the warmth of home while learning.
Our projects balance traditional and 21st Century Skills in Winter and Leadership Camps and creating offline learning systems for remote villages.
Sustaining Our Environment
Climate change means so much more than warming weather. It means the systems in place for a millennium need re-working; and in a culture that is rapidly losing its rural population.
We work to bring both innovations and dignity to herders and farmers.
Our projects start future farmers at a young age, encouraging schools gardens, winter workshops and supporting young weavers from nomad communities.
Health for Marginalised Persons
In parts of the Himalayas, accessing health care is difficult. Or maybe the stigma of a traditional culture keeps people away from high quality care. Or its just a lack of health education.
We work in partnership with professionals to change how people relate to care.
Our projects include supporting families with HIV/AIDS or Hep B, expanding access to mental health services and addressing substance use in youth.
